the latest update is that we are back inpatient at sloan as of yesterday. adrian became neutropenic (meaning his white blood-cell count drops to zero and he has little immune function) again and struck a fever: recipe for admittance back as an overnight guest at sloan.
for those to whom "neutropenia" is new, this is something that happens sometimes (too often, for our liking) during chemo cycles. the layman's explanation is that the chemo is doing its job killing the cancer cells, but it is also killing the good (in this case, infection-fighting) cells. the white blood-cell count indicates the body's ability to fight infection (which, again, is currently very little to none), and fever, of course, indicates that adrian could have an infection, so he has to stay in the hospital until his white blood-cell count rises. he will gain strength and his numbers will rise again--he has been through this routine quite a few times now--we just hope to keep these stays to a minimum.
